Keeping Kids Safe Online
For the past few years parents have started recognizing the risks that unsupervised online activity poses on children. Unfortunately, parents often forget that many cell phones and gaming systems can also access the Internet. According to Daniel Bentley’s article, Call to Improve Mobile Internet Controls, “There are concerns about young children accessing social networking sites, which can be used for cyber-bullying, and internet pornography.” That is why Tanya Byron is calling upon the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) to work with mobile phone [and game console] manufacturers to enhance parental controls on internet capable phones [and gaming consoles].” Today potential risks to our children are not as intuitive as they used to be. Parents must take a proactive role and keep in pace with technology in order to keep their children safe.
