I developed my first Web site in 1995. In Notepad. It was pretty bad. Over the past 15 years I have become an expert in HTML and CSS and have lived through and adopted all versions of each. With CSS3 already in use, we look forward to HTML5.
In basic terms, HTML5 is like a combination of HTML and XML, but it also aims to handle web applications better than our existing iterations. If you’re a Web developer, you should educate yourself on HTML5 as it’ll soon impact the way you work. Here are some good resources:
